Dreams

They come a long way

Not today

Solange

Dreams

I’ve been rocking this Playlist for a while now before I finally managed to upload it for you! This month I did something I usually don’t do: I added more than one song from several artists.

Artists I can’t get enough of this month

I listen to Solange’s ‘Binz’ and ‘Dreams’ from her latest release ‘When I get home’ all day. The same goes for my last Podcast guest IAmTruStarr‘s ‘Move’ and ‘Good to you’. As I said in the interview, his music is so diverse that I don’t even count him as one artist

Not waving, but drowning

Another artist I chose two songs of is Loyle Carner. I get so emotional every time I listen to his song ‘Sun of Jean’. It features both his Mum & Dad and the way his Mum talks about him and his ADHD makes my heart jump.

Loyle Carner has just released his latest album ‘Not Waving, But Drowning’ this month. It’s just as emotional as the songs from his last album and I added ‘Loose Ends’ which features Jorja Smith.

Berliner Negritude

Lastly, I added my favorite song from rapper Musa’s debut album ‘Berliner Negritude’: Treppenhaus.

I interviewed Musa back in May 2017. At the time he wasn’t sure, whether he would ever make his own debut. I’m so excited that he did and there’ll soon be another epsiode about it!

The Healer Hip Hop Playlist December 2018

This is the last Playlist of 2018 and boy, what a year! There was so much amazing music released this year, that it was hard to keep up, even for me.

If you want to read a very good summary of this year’s greatest releases (while listening to my playlist ūüėČ go over to my girl Wanja Lange’s (from THHH Podcast Episode 3) page istillloveher.de and check out her articleBest Albums of 2018.

I love this month’s playlist so much and been playing it all day for the past weeks. Two songs I want to particularly point out and absolutely randomly both of them have to do with Brazil. Just listen to these two and you’ll see why!

One is Fabriccio’s song Amor e som which samples Erykah’s track Didn’t you know from her classic Mama’s Gun (need I say more):

Another song I want to point out is by Ill Camille and called Sao Paulo. I have just recently learned of Ill Camille and love her laid-back style. I couldn’t¬† agree more with the following description of her:¬†

The consistent blah-blah-blah of the mumble rap crowd, mixed with those deft lyricist and songwriters who keep us grooving seem to be everywhere. Only one,¬†Ill Camille, the Compton-born, Los Angeles-and-Inland Empire-raised rapper + songwriter, has the innate gift of giving the ears exactly what they want. The ‚ÄúJane-of-all-trades‚ÄĚ caught my attention when she tweeted new work in the form of ‚ÄúS√£o Paulo,‚ÄĚ which would feature her alongside two of our faves:¬†Rose Gold+¬†TDE‚Äės co-president¬†Punch.

#14: GiwHa – The Artist formerly known as Musiqman

#14: GiwHa - The artist formerly known as Musiq Man

by GiwHa | The Healer Hip Hop

GiwHa is a quite diverse artist: he is a singer, songwriter, DJ, producer and plays the Piano, bass, drum machine, percussions and a little bit of Sax all by himself.

Born in Nigeria, and raised in Brighton, UK, he grew up listening to a lot of music at home, such as Fela Kuti, Billy Ocean, Marvin Gaye and always played music in church where his mom would sing.

He studied engineering at university, which was more of a back up plan than his true passion. However, this has prepared him for the technical side of music so that it came easy for him to produce music.

I don’t follow people. I follow what I do. GiwHa

Yet, it wasn’t until after his mother had passed away in 2007, that he finally started doing music properly as a producer around 2009. Under the name Musiq Man he has since published¬†two instrumental albums.

Finally artists like Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak and a chat he had with Robert Glasper backstage at the Love Supreme Festival convinved him that there was room out there for his own voice.

People need to hear it from me too. GiwHa

He felt like the name Musiq Man was very generic, so he finally went with a name that meant something to him and that was unique:

GiwHa – after his Grandpa Giwa.

GiwHa only met his Grandfather when he was very young and he remembers that he was scared of him and didn’t want to touch him. He later¬†got to know more about him and learned that he resembles his Grandfather, who was a very important man in his town – Giwa means leader, he was adviser to the King. GiwHa¬†began to realize that that’s ME!

Find out more about GiwHa on Bandcamp or follow him on Social Media!

Music as a Healer:
“Music has always been a healer to me. My first album is dedicated to my mom. She passed away in 2007. She was a singer and music was her passion and I couldn’t think of anything else to make her this proud. I’ve always used music for everything and to express myself.”
